A funny thing happened on the way to the compost bin

I discovered that my yard is full of surprises.

The new bare-root strawberry plants we got for these containers died. We found one healthy survivor of last year’s fungal disease and planted it in the container. All these runners are from that one plant!
Summer squash, a volunteer, growing up my daughter’s maple sapling.

Methinks we have a few pumpkins coming too. Hoping they are from the old seed I tossed back into the wild part of the yard. Feral squash tend to be not so tasty.

Not as easy to see – a volunteer tomato.
Gnome
A few friendly gnomes

A happy forest of sunflowers (planted by squirrels who were sloppy eaters last fall) and tall grass

And hiding in that forest, invisible except from the weedy wild back of the yard, a few pretty daylilies
